In short
We do not sell personal data. We collect only the information needed to run the newsletter and directory, understand how the site is used, and respond to messages and submissions.
When you visit
We use a self-hosted analytics service called Umami to understand overall site visits. It can record information such as the page viewed, referring page, browser and device type, language, screen size, and general location. We also measure clicks to outside websites. Those records include the destination website and path, with query strings and fragments removed, and the link text. These analytics are stored on our own Umami installation and remain there until we delete them.
Umami does not use tracking cookies or follow people across other websites. We use these reports to understand site use, not to identify visitors by name.
Our web server also receives the information needed to deliver and protect a page. Routine server logs can include your IP address, the page requested, the time of the request, and browser details.
Browser preferences
The Directory saves your language and light or dark theme choices in your browser’s local storage so it can remember them on your next visit. These preferences stay in your browser and are not cookies.
Newsletter subscriptions
Our signup forms are provided by Beehiiv. If you subscribe, the email address and any other information you enter are sent to Beehiiv so it can manage your subscription and deliver the newsletter. Beehiiv may also process information when you use its form. See Beehiiv’s privacy policy for details about its practices.
You can unsubscribe using the link in any newsletter.
Directory submissions and messages
If you suggest a listing, report a correction, nominate yourself as an ambassador, or email us, we receive the information you choose to send, such as your name, email address, and message. We use it to review the request, update the Directory, or reply to you.
Directory submissions are stored in our admin system and may also be emailed to the people reviewing them. Moderators can delete individual submissions; we do not currently have an automatic deletion schedule. Please avoid including sensitive personal information in a submission.
How information is shared
We do not sell personal data. We use service providers that help run the site and deliver the newsletter, including Beehiiv for newsletter subscriptions. Directory submission notifications are sent through our email provider. Information may also be handled by these providers’ systems as they provide those services.
Other websites
Our pages load font files from Google Fonts. When your browser requests those files, Google may receive basic connection information such as your IP address. The Directory’s software libraries are hosted on our own site. The Directory and newsletter also link to other websites. Their privacy practices are their own, so please review their policies when you visit them.

To ask us about information you sent directly to us, or to request that we update or remove it, email thisis@norwalkoyster.com. A moderator can remove directory submission records. For newsletter subscriptions, use the unsubscribe link in the email or contact us at the same address. Beehiiv may also collect technical or newsletter engagement information when you use its signup form or receive an issue; see Beehiiv’s privacy policy.
